Sewing And Why I Do

Sewing For My Life.

My journey into the sewing world began when I was 12 years old, and my form of sewing is cross-stitch. I remember that my baby sitter at the time got me into it, and from there it has become an obsession.

I am able to take my work with me just about everywhere I go, and when I can, I pull it out and begin my ritualistic stitching. Road trips, weekends away or just a lazy night on the couch, you can find me with needle and thread in hand, making that picture come to life.

My stitching is stress relief. I find that it helps to soothe my mind and help me to not think of the troubles in my life, although it can also help me to justify the obstacles I find in my way. The up and down movement of the needle through my fabric, the criss- crossing of the stitches and the evolution …(more)

Ah yes, there is nothing better than grabbing my cross stitch out and just stitching away while watching tele or listening to music.  I’m an addict, I’ll admit that, though I collect more than I sew these days.

I have two of my finished projects up on the wall, one a pooh bear and the other a Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny.  I’m working on many more as well, though it takes sooooo much longer to get them done now that there are five little monkeys too look after.

I often suffer from depression, and it is true that stitching away helps to keep me on a more even keel.  My worries get woven into the picture and then washed away when my artwork is complete.  What a way to beat stress hey?

One of the things Les likes about my work is the fact that they can be used as insulation.  Cheeky bugger!  I spend hours, days, weeks, even months on my projects and all they are good for is keeping the house cool in summer and warm in winter!  Ok, so he does like the finished products for what they are as well.

Sewing for me is a personal thing, and much of who I am does go into the works.  I have even designed some of my own patterns, with varying results, including beads and other exotic threads.  Alas, my artistic vision does not come close to that of the professional designers, but at least mine are originals.

While my sewing is a stress relief, and writing about why I sew was pretty easy, writing about writing about why I sew is not!  I mean, everything has already been said in the article itself  so there isn’t really much I can add to it, except for my usual off beat ravings that must by now have you yawning your head off and saying ‘next!’

On that note, I best run along before your sewing needles start poking my bottom in protest of my confussions.
