Electrical Shock- Until We Did The Math

No, don’t worry, no one was hurt!  At least not yet, not until I get around to paying my bills and then my bank balance would hurt.

Our latest electricity bill came in today.  Wasn’t impressed to start with, given this house is fully insulated and we haven’t been using the heating as much.

$800 seemed a bit too much until Les and I remembered to subtract the 12.5% hike in charges.  That brought it back to about $700.  Not too bad considering it was over $1000 for the same time last year.

Even better is the fact that they have been slow in reading the metre and the bill is for 4 months supply, not 3.  So for 3 months, it should have been $525!!!

Taking the bill at face value, it looks like we have used way more electricity than we should have, but taking into account the amount of time the bill is for and the HUGE charges increase, it works out that we have effectively halved our electricity usage!!!

I’m not saying I’m looking forward to paying the bill at all.  I despise being forced into paying way too much for essentials.  Being a low income family, it is hard to save at all, though I do my best, and most of this bill is already paid for.

Smart me says pay half now and the other half next pay to avoid having to restrict our already tight grocery budget.  It just means I don’t have any money for my fortnightly shopping, so will have to make do with the garden pots I have for another month.

Life is hard enough without our electricity companies jacking up their charges on us.  Pretty soon, our family will be back to the dark ages the way they keep raising the charges.  Oh well, what environmental impact would we have then?  Only the car and household rubbish!

    Hello honey,

I know just how you are feeling when it comes to power bills, our last was $890!! I damn near hit the roof and went on the search for my teenager daughter (now moved out into her own home, YIPPEE) and our latest homeless teen that we had taken in . . Both very quickly learnt what it was like to have timed showers, only ONE light on in their rooms and either the T.V, Computer OR stereo going at once NOT all three together . .

I suppose it wasn’t too bad considering that included our electric heating but OMG we did a lot of heavy breathing . . We too deducted our 12.5% hike but it still didn’t make us feel better . .

    Hugs Alana

LOL. Yes, we have done pretty much everything we can to limit our use as well. Bought a dishwasher to save on power and water, which is going to help. Means I’m not on dish duty when Les goes on strike too. Got energy efficient washing machine and dryer, though the dryer is used most days because our clothes line is in the shadiest part of the yard and we aren’t allowed to move it. The good thing about said dryer is that it takes about 40 mins to dry a full load, so isn’t going for long. Cost a pretty packet though.

We do the whole turn the lights and everything else not in use off, but gee, this house is dark if you don’t have some on, and if we have the blinds open during the day, we either freeze or fry our butts off! LOL

No, getting bills and scaling it back doesn’t make us feel better, but what does is knowing that we have done everything possible to limit usage, and that we know what to expect every few months- makes budgeting easier!

I’m sure you teen daughter will quickly learn to curb her electricity usage when she gets her bills. I know I did when I first moved out of home! Lucky you being 1 kid less! Want some of ours? LOL
