Must Be Spring Time - Baby Bird Bonanza

As the days are getting warmer, the mozzies come to snack, there is some little chirping, coming from the back.  You see, our birds have babies, or in the least they have eggs, something that I never thought, I’d ever get to see…

Sorry, but I thought I would go with the spirit of the season.  Indeed, our finches are in the process of raising their 3rd brood (in as many months), with 5 little heads stretching up to be fed this time.  Talk about more than doubling their breeding efforts! (more…)

A Big Bed At Last

You know your babies are growing up when they leave their cot behind in favour of a big bed.

Acacia, who is 2, has just spent the first night out of her cot and in a proper bed.  No dramas at all, she slept through the night.

She was so excited when she saw that Les had put her new bed together, and even more so when she saw the quilt she has!  Lots of pretty colours!

Yes, my 4th baby is definitely a big girl now.  But she looks tiny in her new bed.

I wish potty training was as easy.  Oh well, can’t have it all I suppose.

Nine Months and Still Loving It

An entire pregnancy now! Wow!  Breastfeeding for that long is like, well, having a baby! Yeah, not quite, but you all know which planet I am from don’t you? By the way, that was  a rhetorical question, you don’t have to answer unless you really have to.

For me, making 6 months was a huge deal.  I had never made it that far with any of my previous babies, but our little Puggle is just so easy to feed.

From the instant she was born, she has been a booby monster, and I do mean a monster. She has turned out to be quite the contortionist while feeding, to the point I get comments like ‘Doesn’t that hurt?’ or ‘Is she actually getting anything?’ Yes and yes to both, though my boobs are so numb now, I don’t even notice when Les tries to sneak a handful (and he’s loving that!)

No Babies After All

Sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind when it comes to your loved ones.  Recently, we had to be cruel to our finches, and we removed their eggs from the cage.

Don’t get all huffy on me now, I had good reason for it.  Firstly, many of the eggs had been laid in the seed dish and were practically abandoned.  Then there was the fact that the finches themselves kept tossing them out of the nest box and lastly, some of the eggs were damaged.

As each egg was removed, I carefully broke them open to see if they had been fertilized and how far away from hatching they had been.  Some were fertilized, but most weren’t.  The ones that were, had stopped developing at various stages, with the last seeming to be only days away from hatching.

Les had done his research on finches, particularly about their breeding habits, and found that at first, they aren’t the greatest parents in the world.  His research uncovered the fact that it can take 5 or more clutches of eggs before they get the nesting and hatching part right, and a further few broods before they are successful at raising their babies to adulthood.  Sad, but it is the way they are. It Seems We Are Destined To Have A House Full Of Babies

No, I am not pregnant!  That, sadly to say, is a slight impossibility as we have the best contraceptive in the world, a baby.

We are, however, destined to have babies all around us, though at the moment, they aren’t of the human kind.  But they are still babies all the same, so doesn’t really matter.

Recently, the local wildlife has been bringing their off-spring for visits.  There have been the baby magpies and other birds, the baby snakes, baby possums and many more that we probably never even noticed. (more…)
